La Paz is located on a large bay and faces the Sea of Cortez which separates Mexico’s mainland from the Baja Peninsula. The city is blessed with many protected beaches, ideal for a variety of water activities and family outings. In addition to the large beach along the city’s downtown waterfront, other popular beaches include Playa Palmira, Playa el Coromuel, Playa el Caimancito, Playa del Tesoro, Playa Pichilingue, Playa Balandra, Playa el Tecolote and Playa el Coyote. The best beaches for swimming and sunbathing are those north of La Paz on the road to Tecolote.
Traveling north by water takes you to the wilderness islands of El Espiritu Santo, La Partida and Los Islotes. These islands have been declared a United Nations Biosphere Reserve and they are popular destinations for scuba divers, snorkelers, kayakers, fishermen, and outdoor enthusiasts. Ecologists keep these islands pristine so visitors experience the flora and fauna in its natural setting.
